Bloom and Wither

1 - 9 | Synthetic yarn

My folio focused on interconnections between mortality and nature. I crafted wearable crochet artworks to emphasise these connections, 'Bloom and Wither', representing the circle of life in nature as symbolic of human mortality. The incorporation of both white and red in the dress reflects the opportunity for self-renewal, just as there is in the “bloom[ing]’ and ‘wither[ing]” of flowers, as flowers grow and regenerate in the same soil. The white flowers scattered along the top of the dress depict the early stages of life and purity. The lengthening of the dress mirrors the growth experienced through life. These flowers then bleed to red, representing suffering. As the garment ends, so does life; the red flowers at the bottom of the dress with wool hanging, mirror dripping blood. This imagery of draining blood embodies the fleeting essence of vitality at the end of one's life, as well as the remnants of pain left lingering due to hardships.
